Community Garden Intern at the Rochester Folk Art Guild

Late March – September

The Rochester Folk Art Guild is an intentional craft-based community and farm on 350 acres in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Organic practices have been used in fruit, vegetable, meat and egg production for the 50 years the Guild has been at its current rural location. We grow food for our community residents, supplying produce for our daily communal meals.

We are seeking a community garden intern who will work alongside, and in consultation with an experienced guild member on vegetable propagation. This will include aiding in all aspects of the garden from seed starting, transplanting, weeding and harvesting to cooking and preserving. The intern will spend 4 days a week in the garden and fruit orchards, and 2 days a week in either the Pottery or Woodshop studios, helping with production of crafts. Compensation will be in exchange for room and board; 3 meals a day plus your own room.

We have several single- and multi- occupancy dormitory style bedrooms, with a shared bathhouse. We expect our community garden intern to work the same amount as any other resident six days a week. As the season tapers off, continuing work in the craft shops on a full time basis could be possible.

Additionally, as a part of the community, you’ll be able to experience our spring fed pond and cedar sauna, delicious communal home-cooked and -grown organic meals, weekly yoga classes, and all sorts of social activities. We love making old-timey and bluegrass music; playing volleyball, softball, and board games; hosting community movie nights; craft nights; going hiking and biking; and dabbling in all sorts of kitchen projects. All in all, we welcome visitors open to experiencing the joys and fruitful challenges of working hard and enjoying a simple rural life.

To apply for the Farming Internship, please write a one to two page letter of intent introducing yourself, and describing your interest in this position. Coming for a short preliminary visit is strongly recommended.
