Join printmaker Linda Griswold Davis for a full day of block printing on fabric. This workshop introduces you to the process of designing, carving, and printing your own linoleum block, with a focus on printing on cotton fabrics. Linda has more than 30 years of teaching experience and brings a clear, supportive approach to helping students explore this traditional craft.

This class is open to all skill levels. Beginners are welcome, and returning students will find plenty of room to experiment and extend their skills.

Workshop Structure

Students will learn how to design and carve a soft-kut linoleum block, transfer an image, and use the carving tools safely and effectively. The class will cover how to prepare cotton fabric for printing, how to apply ink, and how to get clear, consistent prints. This is a hands-on and flexible workshop, with time to experiment, try different fabrics, and make multiple prints using a range of ink colors.

Students may bring their own carving tools, or they may purchase an optional $30 tool kit at registration. More details below.

Materials Provided

The Guild will provide all basic materials, including:

  • Pre-washed 100 percent cotton fabric

  • Soft Kut linoleum blocks

  • Speedball fabric block printing inks

  • Shared hard rubber brayers

  • Shared tracing paper and basic studio supplies

Students may bring their own additional cotton items to print on, such as shirts, tote bags, napkins, or fabric yardage. Fabric should be 100 percent cotton with no existing print on it and should be washed before the class.

Optional Tool Kit

Students are welcome to bring their own carving tools and basic supplies. For those who prefer to use new tools or take a set home, an optional tool kit is available for $30. The kit includes:

  • Speedball linoleum cutter handle with interchangeable blades

  • Plastic ink mixing tray

  • Graphite pencil

  • Sharpie marker

  • Mars plastic eraser

Kits can be selected at registration.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is open to ages 12 and up. No prior experience is needed. The class is suited for anyone interested in hands-on making, textiles, or traditional print processes.

Pricing

The course fee is $140, which covers a full day of instruction and all provided materials. The optional carving tool kit is available for $30. Scholarships are available. For information, email programs@folkartguild.org.

Accessibility

This workshop takes place in the Romeo Guest Center. The building has ramp access and an accessible bathroom on the first floor. There is also a full kitchen including a refrigerator and microwave to store lunch. Contact programs@folkartguild.org with any questions about accessibility.

About the Instructor

Linda Griswold Davis has taught printmaking and visual art in Rochester-area schools for more than 25 years. Her work draws on both traditional and contemporary influences, and she brings a warm, thoughtful approach to teaching. Linda believes that art should be accessible to everyone and enjoys helping students discover what is possible with simple tools and materials.
