Rob Horowitz, MD earned board certifications in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine, and served as chief of the Palliative Care Division at Strong Memorial Hospital from 2015 to 2023. Earlier in his career, he founded and directed Rochester’s Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program from 1999 through 2015, and spent 14 years practicing as a rural emergency physician.
At the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, Dr. Horowitz teaches medical students, residents, fellows, and interdisciplinary clinicians in palliative care and serious illness communication. Together with his colleague Dr. Tom Carroll, he co-developed URMC’s Advanced Communication Training (ACT) program, which helps clinicians deepen their skills in clear, compassionate communication with patients and families facing serious illness.
In 2023, Dr. Horowitz introduced the Pal-KAP program at URMC and serves as its medical director, working alongside psychotherapy director Marc Swogger, PhD. Among the few palliative care-embedded psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy programs in the United States, Pal-KAP uses ketamine alongside structured psychotherapy that may help ease the psychological and spiritual distress that can accompany serious illness and support quality of life throughout its course.
